The quality helmet exchange component of Helmets for Families is providing 3,986 quality helmets to parents of primary school children at a subsidized price in exchange for their low-quality “eggshell” helmets.
From February to May, 2015, 1,399 helmets were exchanged to parents of 9 project schools. AIP Foundation is collaborating with governmental stakeholders, civil service workers, and traffic police to exchange the remaining 2,587 helmets to parents in surrounding communities. Parents receive information about the importance of wearing quality helmets, the expiry of a quality helmet, and how to use a helmet correctly.
During the 2014-2015 program, Helmets for Families trained 65 volunteers (civil service workers), directly reached more than 2,500 people through community-based helmet exchanges, and indirectly reached 121,027 people through community-based helmet exchange activities.
Furthermore, the program plays an important role in the recently launched “National Child Helmet Action Plan” led by Vietnam’s lead agency on road safety (NTSC) and AIP Foundation. This plan combines quality helmet provision to children with education and police enforcement. It has led to significant increases in child helmet use–from 38% to 68% in Vietnam’s three major cities. Dr. Khuat Viet Hung, the Vice Chairman of the NTSC, committed to addressing the helmet quality issue with parents and children nationwide.
