Teachers collaborate on teaching materials to promote helmet use at the school

The Helmets for Families program supported by Manulife Cambodia, trained 42 teachers at Hun Sen Krong Primary School on motorcycle helmet use. Hun Sen Krong Primary School is especially vulnerable, as approximately 80-95% students commute by motorcycle or bicycle, yet less than 10% wear helmets. Students and teachers are extremely vulnerable to road crashes, particularly during rush hour when they are commuting to and from school. The training focused on the benefits of correct helmet use for families and community, highlighting teachers must play an active role to ensure that their students wear helmets every time they travel by bicycle and motorcycle. The teachers shared their experiences and brainstormed techniques on how to encourage students to always wear their helmets. Teachers and coordinators created workplans, lesson plans and teaching materials to prepare them to take action after the training. At the conclusion of the training, teachers committed to putting helmets on their students, no matter the distance or travel time, when riding on a motorcycle.
