Chevron Thailand has partnered with AIP Foundation since 2014 to implement the Chevron Street Wise program to create a safer environment for road users – especially young children – through education, awareness-‐raising, as well as stakeholders and community engagement.
The partnership between Chevron and AIP Foundation began in 2014, when both partners joined forces to conduct a needs assessment and collect baseline data on the road safety situation in Songkhla province. Based on the results from the initial research, AIP Foundation developed the program activities and road safety curriculum for the program with support from Chevron. In 2015, the Chevron Street Wisepilot project was launched, which is now well established as a legacy road safety program in Thailand. To date, 30,708 students, parents, teachers and government stakeholders have directly benefited from the program, with more than 2.8 million people reached indirectly through the program activities.
“At Chevron, we always prioritize safety, not only in our operations but also in the safety of the communities where we operate. Because we believe that safety is the foundation of a good quality of life, Chevron has partnered with AIP Foundation and the Songkhla Provincial Road Safety Center to launch the project since 2014 to raise awareness and instill a culture of road safety in communities in Songkhla and Nakhon Si Thammarat provinces, especially among youth, who are vulnerable and at high risk from road accidents. Over the past 10 years, the project has helped more than 30,000 students, parents, and communities gain the knowledge and skills necessary to use the road safely. Chevron is proud to be a part of this project and would like to thank all parties involved for their collaborative efforts, as we believe that safety requires continuous communication, education, and discussion to create a sustainable safety culture in Thai society,” said Mr. Chatit Huayhongtong, President, Chevron Thailand Exploration and Production, Ltd.
During the program’s implementation, 14,955 students demonstrated improved road safety knowledge and skills, and 15,753 parents, teachers, and community members benefited from road safety education and communication activities. Student helmet wearing rates increased from 10.5% to 34.8%. Regarding pedestrian safety, 53.6% of students used the crosswalk outside schools before the interventions and 92.7% use it after the program implementation. 76% of students were using the sidewalk properly before the program began, which has since increased to 92.1% afterwards.
“As we celebrate 10 years of the Chevron Street Wise road safety program in Thailand, we are proud of the meaningful impact we’ve made in protecting young lives. This milestone reflects the power of sustained collaboration with schools, communities, and government partners and our shared commitment to building a culture of road safety that starts with the next generation,” shares Greig Craft, Founder and President of AIP Foundation.
The Chevron Street Wise program is inherently aligned with the Global Agenda as part of the Second Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021 – 2030 and Thailand’s National Road Safety plan. At the core of this program, all activities engaged our youth to be a part of the solution to empower their community to be safer road users, thus giving them access to safe mobility.
Today, Chevron representatives, school and community leaders gathered with AIP Foundation to mark 10 years of impact of the Chevron Street Wise program. The 10th anniversary event included a welcome speech by Greig Craft, Founder and President from AIP Foundation, as a session looking back at the lessons learned from the program. Throughout the celebration, 32 Master teachers were awarded their certificates, and AIP Foundation presented on the 10 years of impact of the program. A session was also included on the next steps, with recommendations from road safety experts on where the program can continue making a difference.
A Commitment to Safer Roads for Youth in Thailand
Road traffic injuries are a leading cause of death and disability worldwide, with nearly 1.2 million people killed and as many as 50 million people injured each year. Thailand continues to face pressing road safety challenges, particularly for young and vulnerable road users. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), road traffic injuries remain a leading cause of death for children and young adults (5-29 years old) globally. In addition, more than 1 of every 4 deaths occur among pedestrians and cyclists around the world.
In Thailand, according to a Ministry of Public Health report assessing the impact of road crashes between 2011 to 2019, over 26,000 children had died in a motorcycle crash, and 265,758 were injured on the roads. The main victims were the age group of 15-19 years, followed by the age group of 10-14 years. Among them, 72% learned to drive a motorcycle from family members and friends, 87% did not pass the safety training, 86% did not have a driving license, and 55% had motorcycle crashes on 100-110 CC. Recognizing this, the Chevron Street Wise program is dedicated to equipping students with essential road safety knowledge and practical skills to navigate roads safely.
Chevron Street Wise– 10 years of impact
The Chevron Street Wise program is well-renowned for its holistic approach to road safety education in schools, encompassing road safety weeks, the road safety ambassadors program, the production of road safety corners and helmet distributions, as well as its strong network of key stakeholders who make the program possible.
Road Safety Week has long been part of the core activities of the Chevron Street Wise program, always offering a dynamic series of activities for all participants. These include hands-on training at interactive learning stations covering helmet safety, pedestrian awareness, traffic sign education, survival and rescue techniques, and emergency response preparedness. Led by experienced road safety instructors, these activities aim to instill lifelong safe mobility habits among students.
Training events have been held to promote road safety awareness among young people, helping to empower the next generation of road safety ambassadors of the Chevron Street Wise program. A total 2,657 road safety ambassadors have been trained, ensuring the school community is safer.
Three Road Safety Corners and one Learning Center have been launched and established as part of the program. The Road Safety Corners are a dedicated space designed to facilitate experiential learning. With the support of Chevron Thailand, the renovated learning spaces across program schools will continue to serve as a hub for students to engage with road safety simulations and apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios.
3,482 helmets have been distributed throughout the program to students, promoting road safety and awareness. The helmets were distributed through helmet handover ceremonies, highlighting the importance of wearing high-quality, properly fitted helmets to protect young riders and reinforce safe commuting habits on school journeys.
Overall, the success of the program was made possible through strong collaboration with key stakeholders, including local government authorities, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) teams, and community partners. Their active involvement helped ensure that safety campaigns, parent and teacher trainings, and student outreach were effectively implemented. By working together, these partners created a supportive environment that extends beyond the classroom, reinforcing a culture of safety and shared responsibility across the community.
The 10-year anniversary of the Chevron Street Wise program is a unique opportunity to celebrate the impactful partnership between Chevron and AIP Foundation in addressing road safety issues in the province, as well as the local government’s commitment to improving safe mobility for the community.
