HANOI, Vietnam – January 31, 2022
As we celebrate the beginning of the lunar new year in our region, surrounded by family and friends, we are proud to reflect on our work during 2021. Our work this year has been defined by the resilience and dedication of our team in the field, office, and at home across seven countries.
In Cambodia, some of our programs focus on workers’ rights to access safe mobility, by bringing together different actors to impact change on every level, from national to factory-level. This is embodied by our Speak Up! Campaign that gives Cambodian factory workers a voice to address safety issues that they experience on a daily basis to management. In 2021, we trained 223 speak-up champions. Our program reached 13,896 workers and 240 drivers through this campaign. Going beyond road safety, 74% of the Speak Up Champions were female, empowering women to stand up for their rights at their workplace.
Many truck drivers in Cambodia have installed the Eco-Safe app to track and evaluate their fuel consumption and speed behavior while at work. This will lead to an impact for beneficiary savings and provide a respite for our environment.
Our work in Cambodia goes beyond ensuring the commuting safety of workers. With the support of the Australian Volunteers Program, 70,000 surgical face masks, were distributed to vulnerable factory workers during the Covid-19 pandemic, in addition to awareness campaigns that were carried out around six factories in 2021 advocating for WHO hygiene standards.
We are also proud to share our Safety Delivered program achievements across Vietnam, Thailand, India, and the Philippines. The goal of the program is to engage youth through life-saving road safety education and knowledge. Primary school students, parents and teachers are equipped with tools and skills to be smart and safe road users. The program also focuses on training teachers and parents so that they can impart their knowledge to the children. In 2021, we were able to reach 700,567 People Directly and 7,227,966 people indirectly across four countries.
Our legacy program, Helmets for Kids supported by Johnson & Johnson, is dedicated to providing tools, knowledge, and equipment to vulnerable road users, making them the actor for change in their lives. This year, the helmet-wearing rate of students across our new project schools increased from 26% at pre-intervention to 85% at post-intervention, which shows the amazing impact of the project on improving students’ knowledge and changing their behavior of wearing quality helmets.
These achievements above are only a sneak peek into our full achievements of 2021! These key results highlight all of the areas of the Sustainable Development Goals that we are actively working towards achieving – good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, affordable and clean energy, and sustainable cities and communities. In the coming months, we are excited to release our impact report showcasing our driven impact for global change.
