DIEN BIEN PHU CITY, Vietnam – April 14, 2024
An ultramarathon event was organized as part of a series of activities commemorating significant historical milestones to raise awareness among policymakers and the public on road traffic safety and the importance of safe traffic rules across Vietnam. Hoang Thi Na Huong, AIP Foundation Deputy Chief Executive Officer, participated in the event with support from the Global Advocacy Health Incubator.
The event served as a platform to spread the crucial message of traffic safety for all. Organized by the National Traffic Safety Committee and THACO, participants were urged to adhere to traffic rules, with special emphasis on refraining from driving under the influence of alcohol, wearing helmets while riding motorbikes, and observing speed limits. Furthermore, parents and adults were encouraged to lead by example, instilling in children the necessary knowledge and skills to navigate the roads safely, thus fostering an environment of increased road safety across the country.
Participants of the ultramarathon competed in five different distances, ranging from 5 kilometers to 70 kilometers. The running paths took them through renowned historical sites associated with the Điện Biên Phủ Victory, including Him Lam, Hong Cum, A1, and Muong Phang, offering not only a physically challenging experience but also an opportunity to reflect on the historical significance of the region.
The ultramarathon, which took place amidst the backdrop of commemorations for the 70th anniversary of the Điện Biên Phủ Victory, the 115th anniversary of the founding of Điện Biên Province, and the National Tourism Year of Điện Biên Phủ 2024, aimed to contribute to the reduction of traffic crashes and promote the message of traffic safety for all.
Through this initiative, organizers aimed not only to commemorate important historical events but also to underscore the importance of prioritizing road safety as a collective responsibility. By fostering a culture of respect for traffic regulations and instilling safe practices among all road users, the event sought to contribute to the creation of safer roads and communities across Vietnam.
