AIP Foundation Thailand Chairperson Ratanawadee H. Winther joined fellow road safety experts for an advisory group meeting convened by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), the Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE), and the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Meeting participants discussed global and regional mandates and updates on road safety in Asia and the Pacific, with a specific focus on issues related to vulnerable road users including pedestrians, school children, the elderly, and handicapped citizens. The outcomes of the advisory group meeting will be reviewed and incorporated into the meeting agenda for the conference on Safety of Vulnerable Road Users in South East Asia, being held in India from 9 – 11 November 2017.
According to UN findings, in the Asia-Pacific region, one person is killed on the road every 40 seconds, resulting in more than 2,000 road crash fatalities a day and more than 15,000 road crash fatalities a week.
